Blue Herron Adventures drift boat is very quiet, as are the pontoon boats. On many occasions, much of the wildlife are not aware of our approach. The sound of the oars gently slapping water usually announces our presence. This provides an opportunity to take an assortment of close up and unique photos of a variety of Alberta's beautiful natural attractions.
The Red Deer River is home to a vast assortment of birds - from the tiny pine siskin to the huge birds of prey. The great blue heron is always a treat to observe, as is the pelican and the osprey. A nest of bald eagles provide annual entertainment to adventurers early and mid season.
The Blue Herron Adventurer encounters a variety of 'fowl families' on the Red Deer River on almost every excursion. The number of young has ranged from two to sixteen. It is always interesting to watch how effortlessly the mother guides her entourage as they slowly pick up speed to cruise swiftly along the top of the water.
On many adventures eagles have been spotted frolicking and sparring in the sky, posing along the riverbanks or scooping fish from the water. The majestic birds have watched our approach from the distance, allowing us to glide extremely close, while keeping a wary eye on any unassuming prey. When deciding to take flight, the speed and agility are overshadowed by the incredible wingspan as the giant bird gracefully ascends.
Blue Herron Adventures also come upon beavers with great frequency. These industrious creatures are constantly seen drifting by or busy on shore. There is evidence of their carpentry all along the riverbanks. Many of the beaver that we have encountered seem to have little fear of us silently gliding alongside of them, and will cross our path many times. We actually found one lazy one, who spent a very long time grooming himself on shore. When some of them get too close, or feel threatened in any way, they slap their tail down really hard on the water creating a spectacular sound and sight. It is an exhilarating experience you won't soon forget.
